The Fear project was designed to “educate” the public on how to prepare for a terrorist attack. I planned to take the power the government was using to generate fear a step further and by doing so making it too absurd to believe. I wanted people to connect these signs to the ridiculous color chart, the ready.gov campaign, and the other fear mongering that was keeping the majority of the public scared enough to go along with whatever they were told. The signs were supposed to look like an extension of this strategy beginning at universities headed by an Orwellian sounding group, the Foundation for Education About Readiness, or F.E.A.R. In order to make it more believable my brother and I dressed up as workers for this organization(our picture got destroyed before I could copy it)and flooded Thirteen buildings with over 450 of the signs. We did it during the 8:00a.m. classes, so when people got out they saw these warnings everywhere and had to look at them for about four hours. Some lasted longer than others, but when the word got out what was going on, there was a massive roundup of them (thanks in part to Jay Way, who was a little mad that they tricked her at first). I knew they would be taken down pretty quickly, but it was great watching all the different reactions and really seemed like people were thinking about it. There was lots of dialog about it and even some classes devoted their lecture time to discuss it in depth. Hopefully it enlightened some people, at least it got me an A for my final.
Here is a map of the campus with all the buildings we hit.
